“The Belle of Charleston” by Jerri Hines

Jerri Hines has written the wonderful Southern Legacy series.  I have finished reading the first book in the series, “The Belle of Charleston”.  This series of novels take place in antebellum Charleston, South Carolina.   Josephine Buchanan Wright is striving to be a true southern belle, however entangling herself in a love triangle that scandalizes Charleston society.  Cullen Smythe has been raised alongside his cousins, Percival, Wade and Andrew Montgomery.  Jo has set her sights on Wade, who encourages her affections even though he knows that he must follow the dictates of his grandfather and take the place of the deceased Percival as the groom of Clarissa Wragg.  This marriage is fated to take place to bring the two inheritances together.  Jo finds herself trying to overcome the scandal that ensues and along with the help of Cullen plans a new life in the north.  However, the duties of a southern gentleman and lady do not permit this plan to continue.  Jo is destined for another fate.

I found this novel quite entertaining, and love the time period written about.  However, it is the first book in a series and is definitely NOT a stand-alone novel.  The ending provides a disappointing cliffhanger which hopefully will be resolved in the next book of the series.  I am anxious to continue reading this series and thought that this first book kept me wanting more.

I was sent a free Kindle copy of this book from NetGalley.com, Choosy Bookworm, and Jerri Hines in return for my honest review.
