“A Place in His Heart” by Rebecca DeMarino is Book 1 in the The Southold Chronicles series.
The novel begins in England in the 1600’s during the time of the Anglican Church’s persecution of the Puritans. Anglican Mary Langton longs to marry for love, but her father has negotiated a marriage with the son of a friend, a childhood friend of Mary’s. Mary is definitely not wanting this marriage because she wants to marry for love as her sister did. She takes a liking to the village baker whose wife passed away and left him with two young sons to raise. Barnabas Horton is a Puritan who is becoming increasingly wary of staying in England because of the persecution of the church. He has not yet gotten over the death of his beloved wife, Ann, but needs a mother for his sons. Mary and Barnabas marry, each for their own reasons. As time goes on, Mary strives to be a good wife and mother, but Barny and the boys refuse to accept her as they should. In time, they leave England for the New World and freedom.
I enjoyed reading this novel and would highly recommend this book. Follow this family’s adventures as they endure the harshness of the English rule and find freedom in the New World. I’m looking forward to more novels in this series.
